Internet of Things

This place – my site, this blog – attracts no attention. I’m fine with that, I can say whatever I want and very few people will ever even notice.

I call this a hypertech society. Hypertech isn’t a word, I made it up. It just feels like a word. And it describes evolution falling behind while our intelligence propels us to knew glorious technological heights.

It’s frightening. I like stuff – I like electricity and running water and washing machines and coffee makers and even my phone and laptop – but does the phone need to be able to talk to my coffee maker??

The internet of things – where even dildos are wifi capable – is bizarre. But it wouldn’t even be that crazy if AI wasn’t more and more involved in every little thing. It’s not just our toys – AI is increasingly being relied on to power our electrical grids, to run wastewater treatment plants, and other large-scale applications. Is that really necessary? Can’t we just have 2012 internet back?

I like ChatGPT. There is NO WAY I could have got through the last year of grad school without it. I did not cheat; I used it to do my research for me. What took hours and hours in the library with special access to real scholarly journals now only takes seconds, maybe minutes. I write better than AI, better than chatGPT. But I had help with acquiring raw information and consolidating it.

But I’ll be damned if it’s gonna suck up more water than me. Washington is already fighting back against those high-powered AI data centers. They scare everyone. I live in one of the prettiest places on earth, and having ChatGPT isn’t worth how ugly it will make things.
